When you hear Outback Steakhouse, it would make sense that you think of steaks and therefore assume it would be gluten free friendly…aside from that ridiculously amazing honey wheat bread loaf that you can no longer have. You’re right, but I’d like to point out that the options don’t end there. Outback’s gluten free menu looks a lot like their regular menu but without the prices…so you may want to get your hands on both.
Today, I strayed from my top two choices (Shrimp Caesar Salad, no croutons with extra dressing and the Sirloin and Grilled Shrimp, with a gf side Caesar and sweet potato) to show you that there is a bit of variety incorporated. I opted for the Ribs and Chicken on the Barbie and switched out the fries (no designated fryer, sorry) for a side Caesar salad. Notice a trend? Caesar with no matter what I order. I don’t like Caesar dressing but I can’t get enough of theirs. It has serious flavor and a peppery bite to it! To further my fun, I finished off with a Chocolate Thunder From Down Under, which is a customer favorite dessert that no one suspects is gluten free to begin with. It is a generous slab of pecan loaded brownie, topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, hot chocolate sauce and shavings. Yep, that’s my kind of fun.
Overall, most of their steaks are good choices if you heed the warning about the au jus. In addition, they have a number of satisfying fish and seafood options, and the majority of their dressings are gluten free, so a lot of things are within reach. If you make it clear that you are ordering from the gf menu, which you should to ensure your safe eating, salads are mixed in special bowls and they change their gloves, etc. The place they lack? Appetizers or should I say Aussie-Tizers? You are really limited as you watch those extreme Bloomin’ Onions get trotted out to nearby tables. But by skipping appetizers, maybe you’ll have room for dessert? It is all about the silver lining right?
