Me, My Bowl And My Handy Pamphlet At Moe’s, February 17, 2014

I tried Moe’s Southwest Grill gluten free menu offerings today!  Walking in, I started off on my phone finding the gf options online but then saw a Food Mission pamphlet on the glass case.  Opening that up, there is a clear list with pictures of meats, toppings and sauces that are gluten free.  After viewing their allergens list, I can fairly safely sum it up as you can have all the meats, beans, toppings or sauces you want but need to avoid the chips, tortillas and cookies.  But always double check.  We know that things change without notice.

Wandering my way up to the counter woman, I said I think I want a rice bowl?  I’m not familiar with the lingo at all but somehow burrito bowl seemed to be right but sounded wrong because I can’t have a burrito?  I asked her to bear with me, I hadn’t been here before and am gluten free, showing her the handy pamphlet.  She pleasantly responded, “would you like me to change my gloves?”  I said yes, that would be helpful, and thanked her.  She immediately switched, as did the next man to the right of her.  I ended up getting a bowl with rice, steak and pinto beans from her.  It was then handed off to the man (who she reminded me had changed his gloves), that added lettuce, shredded cheese, pico, black olives, a couple jalapenos and sour cream at my request.  I asked the man if I should add anything else since he’d know better than me.  He said he liked the Chipotle Ranch and that it was okay for me, so I said to go for it.  Looking back, he was right.  Not only did I like it, it seemed to tie everything together well.

What can I say?  It was very fresh and I walked away full.  I started out eating half the side of my bowl and when I toppled down the other side, my bowl was magically full again.  This is something I’d make at home so I don’t see myself going back often, however, I do see myself stopping in as a practical lunch or dinner option particularly when I’m traveling.  Aside from the food itself, I enjoyed their funky food names and music from the dead they pride themselves in.  Moe deserves a gold star.
